- What’s free, and what costs money?
- Downloading Scrub is free, and inspecting is free forever — every hidden field in any photo, including the GPS pin on a map. Cleaning is free to run too: you watch the strip happen and see the verified result before paying anything. Keeping it is the paid part — a single $2.99 purchase unlocks saving and sharing your scrubbed copies, bulk strip included, forever. No subscription, and nothing else to buy.
- Do my files ever leave my device?
- Never. Scrub has no server and makes no network requests — inspection, cleaning, and redaction all run locally. It works with the internet turned off. That’s the whole point for documents especially: every web-based PDF cleaner uploads your file to someone else’s server. Scrub never does.
- What file types does Scrub support?
- Photos: JPEG, PNG, WebP and HEIC. Videos: MP4 and MOV. Documents: PDF, Word (.docx), Excel (.xlsx) and PowerPoint (.pptx). Inspection is free for all of them; the one-time unlock covers saving and sharing the cleaned copies.
- Does cleaning reduce quality?
- No. For JPEG, PNG and WebP, Scrub removes metadata at the container level without re-encoding, so the image data is byte-for-byte untouched. Videos are re-muxed the same way — the compressed picture and audio are copied frame-for-frame into a clean container, no re-encoding. For documents, only the metadata is rewritten; your text, images and layout are left exactly as they were. (HEIC photos are the one exception: they’re converted to a clean high-quality JPEG, since HEIC can’t be edited losslessly on device.)
- What’s actually hiding in my files?
- A typical iPhone photo or video carries GPS coordinates, the exact capture time, your device model and recording software, and sometimes a name or copyright. PDFs and Office files carry author names, your company, total editing time, and the comments and tracked changes you thought you’d removed. Scrub shows you all of it before removing it.
- Doesn’t iOS already remove metadata when I share?
- Only sometimes. The share-sheet location toggle is easy to miss, covers only some data, and many apps, upload forms, and cloud drives send the original file untouched. Scrub gives you a cleaned copy you can share anywhere with confidence — and shows you proof it worked.
- Is there an Android version?
- It’s on the way. The iPhone app is available now.
